Every week, 92.9 The Wave shines a light on animals in need through Shelter Pet Saturday, and this December, two very special senior pets—Hugo and Mercedes—tugged at our heartstrings.
Hugo, an 11-year-old Pittie mix, and Mercedes, a 13-year-old Brussels Griffon, were surrendered to Chesapeake Animal Services when their owner moved and chose not to take them along. These inseparable best friends had spent their entire lives together, and Hugo’s devotion to Mercedes was evident.

When K9 Justice League, a local 501(c)(3) non-profit dog rescue, saw Stephanie Taylor’s story, they immediately stepped in to help. Rescuers took Hugo and Mercedes into foster care where they have settled in nicely and their foster mom reports that the pair are never far from each other.
Both dogs have since been taken to the vet, where it was discovered that Mercedes needs critical medical attention. On February 26th, Mercedes will undergo surgery to remove three mammary tumors, have all her teeth extracted, and be spayed.
To help cover the cost of their medical care, K9 Justice League is asking for donations. Senior pets like Hugo and Mercedes often face extra challenges finding homes due to their age and health needs, but with your help, we can give them the loving future they deserve.
