One Direction Bandmates Issue Statement on Liam Payne’s Passing

Though it has been a decade since One Direction worked together as a band, Liam Payne remained close with most of his fellow members. In the wake of his tragic passing, the group has come together to release an emotional statement through their social media channels.

“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly,” the band wrote.

They concluded with, “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”

The coroner’s office in Buenos Aires, Argentina has issued a preliminary autopsy on Liam Payne, who jumped or fell from a hotel balcony on Wednesday — and determined he died of “trauma.”

According to official transcripts, “the cause of death of Liam James Payne, has been polytrauma, internal and external hemorrhage.” The prosecutor’s office said in its press release that Payne appeared to have been alone when the fall occurred, but noted that he “was going through some kind of outbreak due to substance abuse.”

In addition to the group statement, One Direction members shared their personal messages to Liam.

Harry Styles wrote, “I am truly devastated by Liam’s passing.  His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honor to be alongside him as he did it.”

Zayn Malik said, “I lost a brother when you left us and can’t explain to you what I’d give to just give you a hug one last time and say goodbye to you properly and tell you that I loved and respected you dearly.”

Louis Tomlinson said,”I am beyond devastated . . . Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul . . . [He] was an incredible song writer with a great sense of melody.”
