Ryan Reynolds Reveals How They Got Madonna to License “Like a Prayer” for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26, and the soundtrack has just been unveiled, featuring a mix of iconic and unexpected hits. Among the titles are Huey Lewis and the News’ “The Power of Love,” “You’re the One That I Want” from the Grease soundtrack, and “The Greatest Show,” performed by Zac Efron, Zendaya, Keala Settle, and Hugh Jackman from the 2017 movie musical sensation The Greatest Showman.

One standout track on the soundtrack is Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” However, getting this song into the movie was no easy feat. Ryan Reynolds had to meet with Madonna personally to secure her permission.

Reynolds explains, “Madonna doesn’t just license the song, and particularly that song has not been licensed. So it was a big deal to ask for it and certainly a bigger deal to use it.” This meant going the extra mile to ensure the Queen of Pop was on board.

Reynolds and his team met with Madonna, showing her how and why the song would be used in the film. Not only did Madonna give her blessing, but she also offered a suggestion on how to enhance the particular scene where the song would feature. Reynolds said her idea was “spot-on and right.”

Get ready for an incredible musical experience when Deadpool & Wolverine arrives in theaters!
